Abstract

The mammogram is a medical imaging procedure that is undertaken with the aim of making a diagnosis or to assess a woman's response to treatment or their disease progression; it is a type of diagnostic radiography. The test is commonly used to detect breast tumours. This article provides an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the female breast, a discussion of the test, an outline of the reasons why such a test may be required and how it is performed. The possible risks associated with this procedure are outlined. The role of the healthcare assistant and the assistant practitioner (HCA and AP) in assisting the woman pre-, peri- and post-test is also described.
