Abstract

Objective To compare the performance of the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion (K-B) method,E-test,and agar dilution method in the testing of cephalosporin susceptibility in Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG).Methods Totally,100 NG isolates collected from outpatients in the Department of Venereology,Institute of Dermatology,Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences were included in this study. Both the K-B and E-test methods were used to evaluate the susceptibility of these strains to cefixime and cefpodoxime, and the agar dilution as well as K-B methods to determine the susceptibility to ceftibuten. Results The susceptibility rate of these strains was 92.0% and 100% to cefixime as well as 94.9% and 100% to cefpodoxime by the K-B method and E-test method respectively,93.0% and 95.3% to ceftibuten by the K-B method and agar dilution method respectively. Conclusion The performance of K-B method is similar to that of E-test and agar dilution methods in the evaluation of susceptibility to the three cephalosporins in NG. Key words: Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Microbial sensitivity tests; Cephalosporins
