Abstract

A retrospective study of 359 cases of testicular tumours in two teaching hospitals was performed to find out the pattern of disease in southern Chinese. There were 325 cases of germ cell tumours of which there were 183 (56¾) seminomas, 47 (14¾) endodermal sinus tumours, 33 (10¾) embryonal carcinomas, 31 (9.5%) teratomas (20 mature, 10 immature, and 1 with malignant transformation), 10 teratocarcinomas, 8 choriocarcinomas all in combination with other components, 7 spermatocytic seminomas, and 6 others showed a mixture of tissue types. The germ cell tumours were 1.6 times more likely to affect the right than the left testis. 24% of seminomas were in undescended testes. There were 21 cases of malignant lymphoma. Immunohistochemical study for HCG, alpha-1-antitrypsin, and alpha-foetal protein was found to be useful in differentiating tumour cell types. Alpha-1-antitrypsin, positive in 75% of seminomas, may be useful in the diagnosis of extragonadal dysgerminomas.
