Abstract

This paper gives an overview of terrorism and discusses the effects of religious fundamentalism, the development of terrorist activities and the re-emergence of suicide attacks that culminated in the attack of September 11, 2001. The actions of two American citizens, Jane Fonda and John Walker Lindh, are discussed from the perspective of how their individual actions were dealt with under the criminal justices system. An attempt is made to understand the actions of the United States government in handling terrorist prisoners, and the rationale for using military tribunals rather than declaring them prisoners of war. The paper concludes that intelligence is the key to defeating terrorist activities.
