Abstract

The synthesis of Tl-2201 and Tl-2212 superconductors at 550°C and 1200 psi Ar is described. AC susceptibility indicates onset T c's of ∼ 93 K for 2201 and ∼ 118 K for 2212. For both materials, the single-phase composition is not that of the nominally stoichiometric cation ratio Tl:Ba:Ca:Cu = 2:2:0:1 or 2:2:1:2. The 2201 phase forms as a point compound under these synthesis conditions, while 2212 may show a more complex solid-solution behavior. Rietveld analysis of combined X-ray and neutron-diffraction data reveals random substitution of Cu on the Tl site for the Tl-2201 compound.
