Abstract
The article discusses the history of the formation and spread of F. Turner's theory of the frontier. The study presents the dynamics of the research concept of F. Turner, the transition of theory from a regional locus to world history. In Russia, the concept of a border zone, contact zone, frontier was widely used in historical studies of the national outskirts of the imperial period. The article examines the peculiarities of the development of historical and geographical spaces within the empire, draws parallels with the American frontier, the border zones of European states.
