Abstract

Mechanical properties of a material can be improved by refining the grain size of the material. Constrained Groove Pressing (CGP) is one such process which results in ultrafine grain size. In this study, as received Extra Deep Drawing (EDD) steel samples are subjected to multiple passes of CGP. The resulting microstructure and grain sizes are examined through an optical microscope and compared to the original microstructure. Results show that grains become finer with the increase in number of CGP passes(147μm in initial sample to 50μm after 3rdCGP pass). Further, tensile tests have been conducted on these CGPed samples and the tensile properties such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, percentage elongation, toughness, strain hardening exponent and hardening coefficient have been evaluated and discussed.
