Abstract

A critical study is presented of apparently conflicting theories of the instability of tubes subject to internal pressure and an independent axial load. It is shown that each theory is in fact a solution of the problem subject to different constraints on the loading path. Each is a model of a different type of deformation. A method of calculation of the instability loads and strains by step-by-step integration is outlined for (a) sequential loading, (b) proportional loading.
