Abstract

Seasonal and short term changes in surface temperature, salinity, plankton volume, and the abundance of penaeid eggs and larvae are presented. Temperatures ranged from 14 °C to 32 °C, whereas salinity showed little variation from the mean annual value of 40%‰. Plankton volume showed no clear seasonal pattern, but appeared to be correlated with the lunar cycle, showing maxima around the quarter-moon phases. Penaeus eggs were most abundant in plankton samples from December to May, when water temperatures were between 18 °C and 26 °C, and showed a similar correlation to the lunar cycle. Larvae of penaeids other than Penaeus were present in highest concentrations from April to November.
