Abstract

Investigations of heat flow through bonded and brazed tools have shown that heat is not dissipated at the same rate in bonded tools as in brazed tools. Therefore temperature is higher in the bonded tool at the tool tip. In the present work, atomized copper powder was mixed with the adhesive in order to improve the thermal conductivity of bonded tools. The finite element technique has been used to assess the effect of mixing copper powder with adhesive on the temperature distribution of bonded tools when used both dry and with coolant. Here, the combined effect of coolant and copper powder on reducing the temperature of the bond line as well as the carbide tip has been assessed. It was found that the effect of coolant on the temperature distribution of bonded tools is more pronounced than the effect of copper powder mixed with the adhesive. Accordingly cutting fluids should always be used with bonded tools whether or not a metallic powder is mixed with the adhesive.
