Abstract

For the quasi-2d model system Rb 2Mn x Cr 1− x Cl 4 with competing exchange interactions and competing anisotropies the temperature dependent line shapes and widths in Q and energy transfer ν of the 2d ferromagnetic (FM) rods and 3d FM Bragg peaks have been investigated by quasi-elastic neutron scattering from a Cr-rich FM sample with x=0.20. Close to the para-to-FM transition at T=49 K, a coexistence and competition of 2d and 3d magnetic order has been observed. Between 38 and 23 K there is mainly 3d order, whereas below 23 K the 2d rods regain considerable intensity. The peak widths in Q and ν of the rods and Bragg peaks are considerably broadened due to a finite magnetic correlation. Very similar effects have also been seen for the AFM side of the system Rb 2Mn x Cr 1− x Cl 4 and may thus be regarded as a general feature of phase transformation behaviour in XY-like systems.
