Abstract

Single crystals of CdGa 2Se 4 and CdGa 2Se 4:Co 2+ were grown by the chemical transport reaction method. The direct optical energy gaps of these compounds were measured and the temperature dependence of the optical energy gap was investigated. The direct optical energy gaps of the single crystals are 2.33 eV for CdGa 2Se 4 and 2.24 eV for CdGa 2Se 4:Co 2+ at 290 K, respectively. The temperature dependence of the direct optical energy gap is well presented by the Varshni equation. The constants of the Varshni equation have the values of α = 1.50 × 10 -3 eV K -1 and β = 544 K for CdGa 2Se 4 single crystal, and of α = 6.58 × 10 -4 eV K -1 and β = 53 K for CdGa 2Se 4:Co 2+ single crystal.
