Abstract

High temperature superconducting (HTS) materials have lower loss, larger transmission capacity, lighter weight, smaller size and less electromagnetic radiation pollution than conventional power cable materials. Thus, HTS materials have been used to make a HTS cable to transmit higher current. If a large fault current (25 kA/1 s) passes the HTS cable itself, the temperature and current distribution variation of the HTS cable will be quite obvious. The temperature of outer conductor layer is a little higher than that of inner conductor layer, former, shield layer and protection layer. The reduction of the current passing the YBCO superconducting film of conductor layer is very steep. However, the change of the current passing the metal layer of conductor layer is quite slow. The total current passing the conductor layer will decrease continuously. The trend and amplitude of current variation for these four conductor layers are nearly uniform all the time.
