Abstract
In this study, Al–Fe intermetallic phase particles and their response to deformation in Al–Mg alloys with high Mg contents forged by cold biaxial alternate forging were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The phase diagram shows that Fe solubility gradually decreased with an increase in Mg content in the Al–Fe– Mg system. Bright-field images and digital diffractograms of the analyzed particles showed that the Al13Fe4 phase formed by Fe impurities was present in the Al–6mass%Mg and Al–8mass%Mg alloys examined in this study. After biaxial alternate forging of one pass, the formation and propagation of cracks along the longitudinal direction in the Al13Fe4 phase particles were observed in Al–6mass%Mg and Al–8mass%Mg alloys.
