Abstract

In a study of 264 bank tellers, different job characteristics were found to be associated with job satisfaction and organization commitment based on career orientation. For career tellers, satisfaction and organization commitment are enhanced by participation in decision making, job challenge, promotion opportunities, and a people-oriented supervisory style. For the non-career-oriented teller, job satisfaction and organization commitment will be affected positively through association in a cohesive, effective work group. Non-career tellers prefer a supervisory style characterized by a task orientation.
