Abstract

With multicultural television available, persons migrating from non-English-speaking countries have the opportunity to view programs which reflect their background. This study examines patterns of television use by Greek immigrants living in Melbourne. Average viewing recorded was 22 hours a week. The results also show that these people commonly watch the same top rating programs as other Australians, but also seek out Greek-language programming. This viewing is heavier among those with limited English-speaking ability, but is not restricted to them, suggesting that cultural maintenance is an important function for most immigrants.
