Television daytime serials, the descendants of their popular radio predecessors, have been offered to the public since the earliest days of television and reach more people every year. This article examines the size and characteristics of their audience, the situations they portray, and the characters that populate them, and discusses some potential implications of all these facts. Natan Katzman is Assistant Professor of Communication at Michigan State University.
