Abstract

Abstract Teleac is an educational institution using a unique combination of broadcasting and other distance media. It is easier to describe Teleac in negative terms than to say what its essential features are. From a broadcasting point of view, Teleac is just one of the institutions for educational broadcasting, like BBC Continuing Education or TV Ontario. Seen from the viewpoint of distance education, Teleac is also an institute providing interested adults with self‐study learning packages; seen from the angle of educational media, Teleac is more than the sum of these two features. In this article we give a complete and up‐to‐date description of the Teleac system and method of adult education. First we give a brief overview of the Dutch broadcasting system in general and the educational broadcasting in particular, and then we provide a picture of the Teleac method in depth; this is major issue of the article. In the last paragraphs the reader will find more information about the participants in the learning system of Teleac and some results of studies on learning effects.
