Abstract
Two pointers to trends in the physics of condensed matter have been the topics selected for the very different schools of training in 1974; the world famous Enrico Fermi school at Varenna, and a further winter college in the well established series at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste. The Varenna course on 'Atomic structure and mechanical properties in metals', organized by Professors G Caglioti and J Bilello, combined instruction in fundamentals of electron theory with very practical considerations: why did the Liberty ships, or the Comet, break up?
