Abstract

The oral cavity provides an excellent opportunity for the formation of biofilm on its various surfaces due to the presence of sumptuous nutrients and other favourable environments. Biofilm formed on the dental surface leads to caries, which ultimately leads to diseases like periodontitis and eventual tooth loss. Biofilm formation on the dental surface causes caries, which eventually leads to diseases like periodontitis and tooth loss. A high volume of research is being conducted to manage the oral biofilm, which may cause not only dental problems but also a variety of systemic disorders. Nanotechnology, as part of modern technological advancement, is used in a variety of ways to manage oral biofilm. Nanoparticles, nanocomposites, and other nano configurations have been found to be effective in eradicating oral biofilm and are a promising candidate for the preparation of tooth pastes and mouthwash. The nanorobots, in the form of dentifrobots and surface topography-adaptive robotic superstructures (STARS), can reach each and every corner of the oral cavity to convey the drug using the ferromagnetic component as a propulsion force.Proper detection of dental biofilm may be precisely done with the help of artificial intelligence by a computer-assisted detection system based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm. Hence, the recent hi-tech achievement can easily replace the tedious conventional techniques of oral biofilm management and add convenience to dental and oral therapeutics.
