Abstract

This research paper aims to present the advantages of Voltage Source Converters (VSC) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) network over a high voltage alternating current (HVAC) system. Transferring the bulk of power through an AC transmission system over a large distance needs a huge amount of reactive power compensation. This complexity can be removed by using HVDC technology as it holds numerous advantages over HVAC. As Pakistan is trying to recover from its energy crisis, it is time to invest in more HVDC-based projects. In this paper, a Matiari Transmission line has been utilized for the practical comparison between HVAC and HVDC networks. Due to its high controllability and the ability to generate or use reactive power as required, VSC-based HVDC can enhance the transient stability of AC networks. MATLAB/Simulink is used to perform several tests to obtain the desired output.
