Abstract

Abstract The anesthesiologist can make the hospital — and especially the surgical experience of patients more pleasant and safe by the use of hypnosis and hypnotic techniques. The preoperative visit is used to induce trance, formal or more often informally, and to explain to the patient in detail the happenings and procedures of the day of operation. A method of teaching a course in hypnosis is presented, outlining the contents of twelve teaching sessions. The author believes every physician should be able to use hypnotic techniques and suggests the inclusion of the teaching of hypnosis and hypnotic techniques in accredited residency training programs.
