Abstract

This paper examines the ways in which neoliberal economic policies are affecting academic work in Israeli universities, prioritizing programs that can generate their own funding, External philanthropic support from North America has enabled creation of an interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies Program at Tel Aviv University that draws substantial numbers of external students, In contrast, gender teaching is largely absent in Israeli geography departments, with the exception of one elective course for geography students at Tel Aviv University which also serves as a basic course for students in the Women and Gender Studies Program. Support for gender research by postgraduate students in geography is funded only indirectly under the theme of social justice.
