Abstract

The introduction of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the secondary school system facilitates the process of teaching and learning. The objective of this study was to identify the availability and use of ICTs by teachers in the Owerri Municipal Council area. Nine secondary schools were purposively selected. The descriptive survey research design was adopted using questionnaire, interview and observation checklist as data collection methods. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of 288 respondents drawn from a population of 853 teachers in Owerri Municipal Council. The data collected were analysed using tables and simple percentages. Findings revealed that availability of ICTs in Imo state secondary schools is still at infancy stage and its use in teaching and learning has not been fully implemented in Nigerian Secondary Schools. Besides, the secondary school teachers in these schools have inadequate ICT skill. The major challenges to the use of ICTs were also identified. Recommendations to ameliorate these challenges were also proffered. Key Words: Secondary, education, ICT, Teaching, Learning, teachers, Owerri
