Abstract

Teacher το Teacher Lloyd Andersen Editor, Teacher to Teacher The descriptions that follow represent a variety of instructional resources and techniques that have been used successfully in educational programs serving the hearing impaired and have been recommended by the users. For purposes of sharing this information with other professionals , educators throughout the country are encouraged to write in. The instructions for submission of information follow the reviews. Contributing Editor Paul C. Peterson Math Professor National Technical Institute for the Deaf Rochester, NY Mini-lectures Videotapes in Algebra Subject: Algebra Age range of students who used the materials: 1720 Educational achievement range of students who used the materials: High school Each tape is about 15 minutes long and focuses on a single math topic with which students have trouble. An instructor using simultaneous communication presents a brief lecture using a transparent board on which problems are written. Important steps or ideas are summarized on frames which are inserted in the tape at appropriate times. "Students are enthusiastic about the tapes; they appreciate being able to view a lecture as many times as is necessary to understand the material. One characteristic of the tapes that students find helpful is that most provide a time for students to turn off the videotape and work problems themselves. Answers are displayed when the tape is turned on again." The following tapes are available: Introduction to Word Problems Addition and Subtraction of Algebraic Fractions Absolute Value Equations Logs—Compound Interest Problems Solving Literal Equations Key Number Factoring Graphing Linear Equations —Joan Carr For more information, contact Paul Peterson or Joan Carr, NTlD, One Lomb Memorial Drive, Rochester, NY 14623. Lotus 1-2-3 Computer Software Subject: Algebra Age range of students who used the materials: High school Educational achievement range of students who used the materials: High school This is designed to supplement textbook materials and classroom presentations. It is a very effective way for a teacher to generate graphic demonstrations and vary parameters with algebraic functions. For example, with straight lines you can change slope and/or y-intercepts and have instant graphic feedback. For a person familiar with Lotus, preparation time is 1/2 hour or less. A paper on this subject was published in the Rochester Area Teachers Association newsletter , March 1985. "This is not a stand-alone program for students . Teacher guidance and knowledge of 1-23 is essential. Students appreciate having many examples available quickly." —Marcia K. Guelman For more information, contact Lotus Development Corp., 161 First St., Cambridge, MA 02142. This information was submitted by Marcia K. Gitelman , NTID, Rochester, NY. Logo as a Tool for a Geometry Course Module Subject: Geometry Age range of students who used the materials: High school Educational achievement range of students who used the materials: 7-12 The module describes the Logo application for the plane geometry course taught at NTID. It serves as a review of the concepts and relationships introduced in the course. "An emphasis is on analyzing situations in various applications that include drawing geometric figures using knowledge of supplementary and corresponding angles, properties of polygons, perpendicular bisectors, midpoints, Pythagorean theorem, and properties of similarity . Student response has been very enthusiastic. A.A.D. I December 1985 489 Teacher to Teacher Logo software is required and the teacher must have some familiarity with the commands." —Maria Shustorovich This information was submitted by Maria Shustorovich , NTID, Rochester, NY. MIRA Plastic Transparent Mirror Subject: General Math and Geometry Age range of students who used the materials: 1018 Educational achievement range of students who used the materials: 5th grade to High school A practical device that may be used to explore many geometry concepts at all levels. Fun for elementary and junior high students, yet sophisticated enough to be used in a rigorous geometry course. "I have used the MIRA with three activity books also available from Creative Publications: MIRA Math for Elementary School, MIRA Activities for Junior High School Geometry, and Geometry: Constructions and Transformations. The last of these works was co-authored by Iris Mack Dayoub , a former colleague who has experience teaching hearing-impaired high school students ." —Vince Daniele For more...
