Abstract

Generalized Taylor dispersion theory is extended so as to include position-dependent irreversible first-order reactions in the bulk fluid and on the boundaries. We go beyond prior analyses in considering: (i) flows whose streamlines are curvilinear rather than rectilinear; (ii) position-dependent tensorial molecular diffusivities; (iii) (conservative) external forces exerted on the reactive species; and (iv) nonuniform surface reaction velocity constants. Potential extensions to time-periodic flows and time-periodic molecular transport coefficients are pointed out. Our curvilinear flow analysis constitutes a necessary precursor to the study of comparable bulk and surface reactions in (spatially periodic models of) porous media.
