Abstract

ANSWER: Only a few minority and low-income students have attended public and private U.S. colleges in the past. Why? What are the barriers which have excluded them from high school completion, college preparation, and college enrollment? Although some higher education institutions have recently increased their nontraditional student enrollment, these groups are still under-represented. The effects extend beyond the schools into the community and the entire society and lead to a recurring cycle of poverty, exclusion, rejection, and deprivation of middle-class socioeconomic benefits.
