Abstract
Ten Gomphonema taxa and four taxa of Gomphoneis from the upper Laurentian Great Lakes are considered. Gomphonema taxa include five new species and one new variety and a new record for the Great Lakes. Two new Gomphoneis taxa are described. SEM study of Gomphonema species indicates that all have occluded puncta. Occlusions may occur on the inside or outside of the valve; their position is species-specific. One Gomphoneis species possesses a stigma that is multiperforate, a condition not previously reported for the genus. Many species of both genera have extra silica on the outer valve surface. Key words: Bacillariophyceae, diatoms, Gomphoneis, Gomphonema, Laurentian Great Lakes, new species, taxonomy, SEM, ultrastructure.
