Abstract
The target dependence of electron capture to (and loss from) bound states of swift protons moving in solids has been evaluated. Several mechanisms have been considered. Solid-state effects are relevant at low (ν lower than the Bohr velocity ν0 = 2.18 × 108cm/s) and intermediate velocities. A comparison of the relative weight of different physical processes is presented for several materials.
