Abstract

‘One thing we can all agree upon, whether we use the word Latinx or BIPOC, is that stories and cinematic representations of historically marginalised populations must include within the storylines their ability to survive, thrive, assimilate and fight in a world that was set up to render their real narratives invisible’. This interview with Salvadoran actress, writer and filmmaker Vanesa Tomasino explores a range of topics, including: ‘truth’; inclusion, stereotyping, representation and cultural imperialism; cinema and television as creative industries; relevance; power and agency in relation to non-white, Latinx and Hispanic filmmakers, actresses, actors, stories; and the potential of film and cinema to humanise social experiences and foster new understandings, empathy and connection. The interview was undertaken via audio files and emails throughout October and November of 2021.
