Abstract

In response to David Thew’s article ( Business Information Review, 15 (1) March 1998, 38–39), which examined the necessity for business information professionals to take in hand their own personal and career development, stresses their need to build the broadest base of skills, abilities and attitudes possible in the likelihood that they will change their jobs and even careers at least once in their working lives. Recommends the compilation and maintenance of a continuing professional development document, listing both skills and a record of training courses, conferences and other professional activities, as a way of compiling job CVs or targeted application letters. Concludes by discussing ways of overcoming some of the obstacles to career development; including inertia and fear.
