Abstract

The audacious, but unsuccessful, attempt by Rupert Murdoch's News Limited to take over the Melbourne-based Herald and Weekly Times Limited (HWT) has revived the issue of Australian newspaper ownership. This article recounts the hectic events of late November last year, considers their effects upon the internal control of HWT and examines the existing legislative machinery concerning mergers and takeovers of newspaper firms.
