Abstract
Over the past few years, the Smithsonian Institution Collections Search Center has made significant strides in engaging online users through crowdsourcing initiatives. In this article the author will examine a month-long project in which the Smithsonian Gardens, a unit within the Smithsonian, focused on promoting the Archives of American Garden's digitized images in the attempts to encourage Smithsonian Garden's stakeholders to apply user generated metadata or public tags to catalog records metadata. In just one month, the Smithsonian Gardens demonstrated how much can be accomplished when resources are focused on outreach efforts. The challenge remains in trying to sustain contributions from virtual volunteers.
