Abstract

Socio-political changes in Poland resulted in the return of religious education to the public school system in 1990, which triggered a widespread social discussion, involving educators, parents and students. This elaboration demonstrates the results of a survey conducted among primary school pupils presenting their opinions on religion lessons, as well as the expectations directed towards a religious professional. The results of the analyses indicate that pupils perceive the importance of religion lessons for their moral development, and that participation in religion lessons provides an opportunity to encourage pupils to practice religion. The effectiveness of religion lessons depends on the religion teacher, his/her preparation and the way the didactic and educational process is implemented. Keywords: religious education, religion lesson, religious professional, pupil.
