Abstract

Foliar application of metalaxyl effectively suppressed systemic downy mildew (Sclerospora graminicola) symptoms and healthy leaves and earheads were produced on the susceptible P. americanum cvs. NHB-3 and 7042. A concn of 31 p.p.m. (a.i.) was effective for recovery of greenhouse plants, whereas for field-grown plants in the downy mildew nursery > 63 p.p. m. was needed. Plant age (7-35 days) at application did not affect recovery but earhead length for recovered plants was decreased if applications were made after panicle initiation. Recovered plants, in both greenhouse and field, subsequently developed diseased nodal tillers and/or green earheads. The 2 cultivars showed similar recovery responses to foliar application of the fungicide in the nursery, but seed treatment (2 g a.i./kg) was more effective on NHB-3 than on 7042
