Abstract

The enamel prism arrangement in the following murid species, found in the Iberian Peninsula—Apodemus sylvaticus, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegiens, R. rattus, Arvicola sapidus, Clethrionomys glareolus, Microtus nivalis, M. agrestis, M. arvalis, Pitymys duodecimcostatus, and P. savii—is studied by means of sagittal sections of lower incisors. The parameters measured were prism width and inclination, thickness of the outer and inner enamel, and the outer enamel index. These data seem sufficient to identify the species with only an isolated lower incisor. It is relatively easy to distinguish Murinae from Microtinae. Within the Murinae the four species under consideration can also be determined. Within the Microtinae it is more difficult to distinguish the species of the genera Pitymys and Microtus, due to their recent paleontological history.
