Abstract

In this paper, we explore the issue of fault tolerance vs. fault detection in engineering systems. We argue that system identification for controller design should be adaptive and therefore fault tolerant, while system identification for fault detection should be non-adaptive. We propose a combined strategy for maximizing robustness and safety of the system. The combined strategy includes a neural network and a Kalman filter.
