Abstract

Numerous developments in component technologies result in new opportunities for integration and standardization for railway systems. Desire to address these important problems in real life and advances in information technologies motivates us to develop new train control concepts. The goal is to develop train control systems which have law operation cost, reasonable investment cost, and high safety and comfort levels. Intelligent railway system (IRS) is proposed as a future system. In order to transfer technologies related to IRS from research laboratories to the real world it is important to develop both component technologies and total system design techniques. This paper describes a requirement-oriented system design approach for IRS. With this method, we identify fundamental requirements and transform them into a physical architecture through several conversion processes. An IRS concept is provided as an application of requirement-oriented system design.
