Abstract

An estimated 355 000 adverse pregnancy outcomes occur annually due to syphilis,1 two-thirds of which result in stillbirth or neonatal death.2 WHO launched the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Syphilis initiative in 2014.3 However, antenatal syphilis screening and treatment rates remain low across sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia,4 particularly compared with progress made to reduce new HIV infections among infants, which have declined from 270 000 in 2010 to 180 000 in 2017.
