Abstract
[Introduction] Our skin is continuously exposed to potential pathogens and plays a crucial role in initiating immune responses to eliminate these microorganisms via various mechanisms, including production of host defense peptides (HDPs). Although originally viewed as antimicrobials, HDPs broadly modulate the immune response through activation of different cell types. We have recently developed a series of novel synthetic peptides termed innate defense regulators (IDRs) based on a natural HDP, bactenecin, and showed that both IDR-1 and IDR-1002 protect the host against bacterial infections through chemokine induction.
