Abstract

Seven trans platinum(II) complexes of selenones having the general formula, trans-[Pt(NH3)2(selenone)2](NO3)2 have been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, IR, and NMR (1H &13C &77Se) spectroscopy. The crystal structure of one of them, trans-[Pt(NH3)2(PrImSe)2](NO3)2 (5) was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The platinum atom in the complex cation adopts a distorted square planar geometry. The spectroscopic data particularly, a significant upfield shift in 77Se NMR indicated the coordination of selenone ligands to platinum(II). The in vitro cytotoxicity of these complexes as well as of cisplatin was investigated using MTT assay against two human cancer cell lines, HeLa (cervical cancer cells) and MDA-231 (human breast cancer cells). The IC50 values showed promising cytotoxicity for the prepared platinum(II) complexes, which in the case of 1, 4 and 6 is higher as compared to cisplatin.
