Abstract

New hexa-coordinated ruthenium(III) complexes of the type [RuX(EPh3)2L] (X Cl or Br; E P or As; L deprotonated dibasic tridentate Schiff base ligand) have been synthesized by the reactions of [RuCl3(PPh3)3], [RuCl3(AsPh3)3] or [RuBr3(AsPh3)3] with the appropriate Schiff bases. The Schiff bases were synthesized by the condensation of anthranilic acid with acetyl acetone/salicylaldehyde/o-vanillin/o-hydroxy acetophenone. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, spectral (FT-IR, electronic and EPR) electrochemical, and magnetic moment data. Catalytic activity of the complexes in the oxidation of alcohols and the antibacterial activity of the ligands and the complexes have also been studied.
