Abstract

AbstractThis paper analyses and synthesizes the findings of the seven case-study chapters in this volume, to: (i) identify the factors that contributed to the emergence or resurgence of community management at the case-study sites; (ii) compare the different organizational models and management strategies used in the different cases; (iii) analyse the outcomes of these efforts and their effects on community and ecosystem vulnerability and resilience; and (iv) provide a synthesis of the challenges and lessons learned from these diverse cases. Topics covered include: motivations for strengthening communities through community-based rangeland management (CBRM); rebuilding community and learning from diversity; comparison between internally-generated versus externally-facilitated CBRM; CBRM resilience and sustainability; and implications for research, policy and practice.
