Abstract

In the present study, a new family of triple-shape memory polyurethanes (SMPUs) were reported. Photo-responsive coumarin-containing poly(ε-caprolactone) (PMCL) synthesized by a controlled ring-opening polymerization in combination with post modification was introduced as the soft segment into a polyurethane network. The triple shape memory effect with staged shape recoveries firstly upon heating and then upon UV irradiation at λ= 254 nm plus heating can be achieved using a one-step deformation programming procedure under UV irradiation at λ = 365 nm when the dimerization of coumarin units was performed. Moreover, the ratios of the first and second shape recovery steps can be changed only by tuning the photo-crosslinking time.
