Abstract

Titanium nitride powders were synthesized by reactive ball milling of titanium powders and urea at room temperature. Based on X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, we conclude that the as-synthesized titanium nitride powders are nano-sized and the grain size increases by prolonged milling. Atom ratio between titanium and nitrogen was determined to 1:0.6 by electron energy loss spectroscopy. Based on thermodynamic theory, it is predicted that zirconium nitride and hafnium nitride can also be synthesized by this simple method.
