Abstract
Copolymerization of norbornene (NB) and ω-alkenylbenzene including polystyrene (PS) macromonomer was performed using 1–MMAO/BHT. The polymer yield and the comonomer content were greatly influenced by the length between aromatic ring and vinyl group of the comonomer. PS macromonomer with 5-hexyl group was effectively copolymerized with NB and the Tg was controlled by the use of 1-octene (O) as a termonomer. The birefringence was not affected by the PS grafted to the NB-O copolymer, probably because the positive photoelastic effect of PS was in comparable magnitude to the negative orientational effect of PS.
