Abstract

Phosphonium ylides constitute a class of compounds of notable significance as precursors in Wittig reactions, a prevalent method in organic synthesis for the formation of carbon-carbon double bonds (alkenes). Over the past decades, the synthesis of phosphonium ylides has become an integral aspect of organic chemistry, given the widespread use of the Wittig reaction in both academic research and industrial applications. Herein, recent developments in synthesis of phosphonium ylides using established and novel approaches are described. In addition, mechanistic details are discussed and applications in Wittig and other reactions are demonstrated for many examples. Furthermore, the synthesis of structurally complex and enantioenriched phosphonium ylides is presented.
