Abstract

A new method for preparation of polymer/clay nanocomposite is reported. It uses an epoxy curing accelerator as modifier in clay modification and the modified clay is treated with acetone to replace water inside the clay galleries. The acetone−clay slurry is mixed with epoxy resin directly. The use of curing accelerator and acetone−clay slurry is proven to be effective in promoting clay exfoliation. An epoxy/clay nanocomposite with highly exfoliated and disordered clay layers is made.
