Abstract

• Dense, predominately single-phase samples of WAlB were synthesized using a reactive hot press sintering method for the first time. • DFT calculations and Rietveld analysis of WAlB indicate that WAlB most likely forms via a topotatic transformation reaction, by the intercalation of Al layers into WB crystal structure. • The calculated linear attenuation coefficients for different energy gamma-rays imply WAlB has a high gamma-ray shielding capacity.
