Abstract
A new complex of cadmium(II) picrate with V-shaped ligand 1,3-bis(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-2-oxopropane (Meobb), [Cd(Meobb)2](pic)2 ·2(C2H3N)·0.5(H2O), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and electrical conductivity, and IR and UV/visible spectra. The crystal structure of the complex has been determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the complex, the Cd(II) ion is six-coordinated with a N4O2 ligand set, resulting in a distorted octahedron. The interaction of the cadmium(II) complex with calf-thymus DNA (CT-DNA) has been investigated by electronic absorption, fluorescence, and viscosity measurements. The experimental results suggest that the cadmium(II) complex binds to DNA in an intercalation mode.
